My one twice said power steering faulty, then it wouldn't start. I never noticed the battery gauge being any different. Called out AA who came out, said battery goosed fitted a new one and cured it. The electrical system needs a good battery.

Thanks very much for this very useful topic.
I have a 2.2 C5 Mk3 Exclusive Tourer that's been suffering a few gremlins over the past few months and the cold weather of late has finally pushed me into buying a new 096 battery from Tayna. After reading this thread several times I attempted to fit it earlier.
Being a little confused by the cam type fixing bracket I thought I’d ensure that I could loosen this first. I hadn’t got the required square section tool to rotate the cam, but managed to improvise with a large screwdriver. However, after doing this and sliding the fixing plate back from the bottom edge of the battery, I don’t seem able to move the battery more than a couple of millimetres from side to side. I’d expected to be able to tilt it back slightly in order to slide it forwards ready to lift out. Am I missing something here; could it be that the wiring to the terminals is so rigid that it’s holding the battery down, or is there another fixing point to slacken off?
I had initially anticipated using jump leads from my terminals to a slave battery whilst making the change, but the ridiculously tight battery space, together with the “advanced”? electronics, necessitating the lengthy routine recommended by Steve in the opening comment, make this very difficult to achieve.

Not sure Paul, but I had the same engine in my C5 saloon X7. I changed the battery because of the economy mode kicking in within a few minutes. I think the battery was a little tight to come out but not difficult. Of course some replacement batteries are different dimensions and the casing "lip" can be bigger. Doesn't the clip slide towards the front of the car to give more space?
As regards the battery replacement procedure, I have to admit that apart from opening the window to make sure I wasn't locked out, I think I just allowed the time to disconnect the duff battery and connect up the new one. Nothing bad happened but maybe I was just lucky! I did note the radio code first though.
JUst remembered, I think I might have had to take the fusebox cover off.

the cam in mine is largely buggered and swapping batteries is problematic, have to resort to pry bars to shove the lip far enough to extract the battery, this despite extended 'exercise' sessions an anointments with a variety of cleaners and lubricants.

The plastic nut is ridiculous!

If I wasn't so lazy I'd remove the battery tray and fix it properly instead of fighting with it every time.

Same with mine - the plastic cam nut is a step backwards IMO. It requires sufficient force to follow through and fully unlock - even if it looks fully unlocked it's not necessarily moved far enough back from the lip of the battery - this can be tested by trying to tilt the battery.

Boiling water Steve, boiling water poured over the fitting will wash all the acid spillings (crust) away, then lube with Vaseline to keep it away.

Also the base of the battery has locating grooves so it can't move sideways, you need to line them up to get it to fit properly.

Thanks for your help Rick. I have slid the clip/front bracket as far forward as it will go and I also removed the fuse box cover. Maybe the old Bosch unit is a bit on the big side. However, I've never seen such a tight space for a battery in a large car and even though I've had Citroens continually since 1973, so I've seen a few strange designs, this is disappointing!
